The “Beaver Lake Grilling Planks” story began when John Sell's parents Dr. O.E. Sell and wife Elsie purchased the original farm in 1954. It is located between Milner and Griffin, Georgia. The family raised beef cattle until 1998 when their daughter Elsa Sell Farr took over the cattle business. The family initiated timber management and conservation on
the Sell Farm, which by 1972 grew to over 600 acres with a 48 acre lake in the middle named” Beaver Lake”.
John Sell graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in landscape architecture in 1967. In 1972, John started Sell & Associates Inc., a landscape design build business working in the greater Atlanta region. In 1980, John designed and built a Scandinavian handcrafted log home which was featured on the front cover of Better Homes & Gardens magazine. John has built over 20 custom built log homes in Georgia. In 1996, John purchased a WoodMizer band saw mill to continue the sustainably harvested timber management and conservation program on the Sell Farm. This grew into a profitable business custom cutting lumber and milling for clients throughout Georgia.
Sheila Starling, now Mrs. John Sell saw the log home article in Better Homes & Gardens magazine while living in her hometown Savannah, Ga. Sheila made an appointment to view the model log home and thus met her future husband. In 2010, John and Sheila reunited an old romance and had a lakeside wedding June 2014. During John and Sheila's courtship, Sheila bought a set of gourmet grilling planks in October of 2012 which spearheaded the “Beaver Lake Grilling Planks” business.
Sheila suggested to John the idea of producing grilling planks with his lumber mill and on January 1, 2013 started together “Beaver Lake Grilling Planks LLC”. Sheila is an avid gourmet cook and her love of cooking was introduced to John and they now passionately enjoy grilling and inventing new recipes together. Sheila's creativity and love of nature is being pursued through her art as a landscape artist. Sheila also has worked in advertising and marketing for the past twenty years and her skills are an asset to the company. John and Sheila Sell joined “The Georgia Grown Association” which has been an enormous help and encouragement to their business. They have been showcasing their business throughout Georgia at shows, fairs, redistribution, retail clients, and their website.
John and Sheila Sell look forward to sharing their cooking adventure with you and hope you try their Georgia Grown gourmet grilling planks.
